In 2009 and 2010 we will be celebrating important events that highlight the women’s international struggle for their rights: The UN International Conference on Human Rights, held in 1993 recognized domestic violence as a human rights’ violation; The International Conference on Population and Development, celebrated its 15th anniversary in September 2009, and represented an important achievement in the field of sexual and reproductive rights; The Beijing Platform to Action adopted at the UN Fourth World Conference on Women that will celebrate its 15th anniversary in 2010. The Center for Hemispheric Policy of the University of Miami has organized a conference "Women in the Americas". CEPIA's director Jacqueline Pitanguy spoke on The Role of Women in Development. Silvia Pimentel, Brazil´s representative at CEDAW Committee also participated at the Conference. For more information please see www.miami.edu/chp.


Cepia in partnership with the National Council for Women's Rights published on the Brasilia newspaper on August 19th the campaign for the right of the women to decide to interrupt an anencephalic pregnancy. Please read more.


Unfortunately the Commision of Foreign Relations of the Brazilian National Congress has approved the Juridicial Stature of the Catholic Church in Brazil. CEPIA understands that this approval hurts the constitutional principle of total separation between state and religion and implies a preferential option for Catholicism. The Program for the Integral Health of the Woman (PAISM) of the Ministry of Health celebrated its 25 years with a large event in Brasília. At the occasion the Minister of Health has recognized the efforts of some Brazilians to improve women's health in the country among which Jacqueline Pitanguy, CEPIA's director. CEPIA hosted a group of graduate students from the Management School of Simmons College, Boston together with the Associate Professor of Management Sylvia Maxfield. A presentation on Women's Rights and Sustainability was delivery by Jacqueline Pitanguy.


CEPIA´s team manfests its solidarity with the medical doctors and nurses that performed an abortion on a 9 years old girl raped by her stepfather and rejects the interference of the Cathocic Church in such matters. The Association 1000 Women for Peace prepared an open letter about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The Letter was broadly divulged during the 2009 Social Forum held in Belem do Para, Brazil. See the letter (in Portuguese).


The Casa Brasil has organized an important round table on "Abortion: criminalization contrasts with progress" with the participation of the Physicians Thomas Gollop and Ivo Pitanguy, the sociologist Jacqueline Pitanguy, the Justice Attorney Daniel Sarmento and the criminal lawyer Maíra Fernandes. On February 1st the Journal of Brazil has published an article of Jacqueline  Pitanguy entitled Reproductive Rights and the Election of Obama.



On january 30, 2009 , A Casa Brasil ( House of Brazil) has organized a debate on the issue of abortion with the participation of Ivo Pitanguy, Daniel Sarmento, Maira Fernandes, Thomas Gollop and  Jacqueline Pitanguy. Questions related to medecine, ethics, legislation and human rights were debated.


Check out the Hemispheric Report prepared by the Committee for monitoring the Convention of Belém do Pará built from the National Reports of each country member that signed the OAS Convention and shadow reports submitted by NGOs of some of these countries. Was discussed by the Committee at its last meeting, in 2008 and approved by the Conference of States Parties.
